One of the most promising young players in Galway football, Alex captained Salthill Devon’s U19 squad in the FAI Underage League Elite Division and represented the Republic of Ireland Schools side in 2013, scoring in Turner Cross against England.

Byrne also made 10 appearances for Salthill Devon’s First Division Airtricity League team in 2013 before signing for Galway United in February 2014.

He had to wait until May to make his first appearance, but Tommy Dunne picked him in the starting line-up in all 5 league matches in the month.

Alex Byrne impressed in defence and midfield and he cemented his place as a starter in Tommy Dunne’s side towards the end of the season. Byrne grabbed his first senior goal in the SSE Airtricity League against UCD in the second leg of the Play-off Final at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Byrne signed a new contract with the club in November and the dynamic midfielder made 28 appearances for Galway United in 2015 before his season was cut short by injury.

The 21-year-old put pen-to-paper on a new contract with Galway United midway through February 2016 but his season was curtailed by injury. New Galway United manager Shane Keegan extended Byrne’s contract at Eamonn Deacy Park until the end of the 2017 season.
