Newcastle West native Shanahan made an impact for Dundalk FC in his first season in the SSE Airtricity League, scoring 5 goals in the Premier Division.

The following season, Gary signed for Johnny Glynn’s Mervue United, where he chipped in with an impressive 10 goals tally in the First Division.

Shanahan signed for Galway United in December 2013 and he was an ever present in the side, making 28 appearances in all competitions, scoring some vitals goals, including a goal against UCD in the Play-off final at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Gary was one of the first players to re-sign in the lead up the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division season and he was a mainstay in the team, featuring in every competitive Galway United fixture in 2015.

Shanahan played a pivotal role for United in 2016, featuring in 36 games for the Tribesmen. The Limerick man has scored 16 goals in 106 appearances from the wing and Shane Keegan extended hiscontract until the end of the 2017 season.
