Curran hopes United can build on Limerick win

A well taken brace from Enda Curran helped United to a valuable win against Limerick FC at Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday evening.

Curran sent Limerick custodian Conor O’Donnell the wrong way from 12 yards to open the scoring by the banks of the Corrib.

With the game finely poised at 1-1, Curran rifled United into the lead with a precise strike with just under 15 minutes left on the clock.

Gary Shanahan’s neat left-footed finish made sure of the points moments later. Limerick pulled a goal back with 5 minutes to go through former Galway United striker Vinny Faherty but it wasn’t enough for the Super Blues.

Talking to www.galwayunitedfc.ie after the game, Curran is hoping that the result can spur United on in the coming weeks.

“It could be a huge turning point in the season,” he explained.

“I can’t see why not. It’s a result and performance we can build on. Conceding the goals was a bit disappointing but attacking-wise we were very good and on another day, it could’ve been four or five but it’s something to improve on in the coming games.

The striker played down his involvement in the win, insisting he was more pleased with the teams performance against Martin Russell’s side.

“It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet. I don’t mind if I don’t score as long as we get the three points and they were needed last night so I was delighted to help out.

“At the end of the day, I’m a Galway lad and I want to do the best I can for Galway United. I love wearing the Galway jersey and I’m proud to score goals for my hometown club.

“Hopefully I can get a few more and chip in and help the team along the way.”

Curran lead the line for United alongside young striker Padraic Cunningham, whom he had high praise for after the game.

“Podge is a young player, he’s coming on a lot. He’s learning bits and pieces as he goes, I was in a similar position to him as a young player coming through at Galway United.

“His movement and work rate is excellent. If we have eleven players that are going to work hard for the cause, you can’t ask for much more and I think our fans appreciate that as well.

“No doubt if Padraic keeps working as hard as he is and he continues to listen to our coaches, he’ll be a very good player for United in the future.”

A difficult mid-week away fixture awaits United on Monday evening at Oriel Park but Curran is relishing the challenge.

“In the Premier Division, you’re going to get difficult games coming at you thick and fast but these are the types of games you want to be involved in.

“We’re hoping to go to Oriel Park and show what we can do. At the same time, you’re going there and you have to be realistic as well but you have to be fearless at times to get a result in this league.”
