As the weekend approaches, Galway United gears up for an action-packed schedule with two significant fixtures across the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division and Women’s Premier Division.

Kicking off the weekend, Galway United’s Senior Men’s side face Waterford FC at the RSC. This encounter is the second time the teams have faced each other this season. United overcame the Blues in Eamonn Deacy Park earlier this season. United will look to get back to winning ways, following Monday’s loss to Bohemian’s and Waterford are fresh off a win against the league Champions. This clash promises to be exciting as the Tribesmen seek to secure vital points away from home.

Waterford have been in fantastic form since former manager Keith Long has moved on from the Blues last month. They have won their last three games on the trot and most recently of which they beat Shelbourne 0-1 in their own backyard on Monday evening.

In the middle of this winning streak Waterford managed to secure a first team manager on a full-time basis with the hiring of John Coleman. Coleman is no stranger to the League Of Ireland, formerly managing the Bit O’ Red in 2014. This Friday’s game against United will be his first game in charge of the Blues as they look to secure yet another three points. The blues now sit in 8th place in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division following their three consecutive wins over Bohemians, Derry and Shelbourne.

The Tribesmen come into the game after two consecutive losses, to St. Pat’s and Bohemians last week. Currently sitting in 6th place, two points ahead of Waterford in 8th. United recently have had quite a good record against Waterford over the last few years but each game is different, particularly with a new look Waterford side under new management of John Coleman. United have been unlucky with several key injuries as of late, so there has been a bit less consistent of a starting XI for Caulfield’s men. One of the changes made recently was a first start for Cillian Tollett, a Galway United academy graduate, he impressed in his 45 minute cameo at Eamonn Deacy Park. The game also saw yet another goal for Moses Dyer, who sits comfortably on top of the top scorers list for the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division with eight goals to his name.

The following day for our Senior Women’s the spotlight shifts to the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division as Galway United’s women’s side faces FAI Cup Winners Shelbourne at Tolka Park. The side will be looking to get back to winning ways, following their defeat against Athlone Town last weekend. United sit in third place on 13 points from six games while Shelbourne sit a place above with 18 points from seven. “The Reds” are fresh from a 1-3 victory over Treaty United in Limerick and are looking to keep that momentum going on Saturday, while United will be looking to get back to winning ways in Tolka Park.

Shelbourne come into the game in flying form with six consecutive wins in the league, and scoring a total of 27 goals in just seven games. They were triumphant in the Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup in 2024, with a resounding 6-1 in over Athlone Town in the final and have certainly carried that into the league this year. Under the management of former League Of Ireland player Eoin Wearen, Shelbourne have excelled domestically.

United come into the weekend after a 0-3 loss to league champions Athlone Town the game previous, it will be a tough test against one of the title favourites but certainly something within the grasp of Phil Trill’s squad. United have been hugely dominant in a lot of games this season, and there were a lot of positives to take from the second half against Athlone too. United have struggled with injuries as of late, with a few experienced players sitting out of the fray at last week’s game against Eamonn Deacy Park, but their Academy players have served them well. Aoibheann Costello has been captaining the side this season and has put in some very inspired performances along with Therese Kinnevey who recently set a new all-time landmark for appearances. There’s a lot to be positive about as United take on the FAI Cup Winners at Tolka Park on Saturday.
