Following their entertaining draw with St. Patrick’s Athletic on Friday night, Galway United picked up another point on the road on Monday evening, following a 2-2 draw with Derry City.
In an uneventful first half, it was the hosts who dominated possession, however it was United who had the better opportunities with Francely Lomboto’s pace causing trouble for the home side’s defence.
The hosts did go close though with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half, but James Clarke saw his spectacular long-range effort smartly saved by Evan Watts.
Just before the interval, the 2023 First Division champions took the lead, following an own goal by Clarke. The former Bohs player knocked the ball into his own net, after Aaron Bolger flicked on a delivery by Killian Brouder.
John Caulfield’s men led 1-0 at the break, with former Shannon Hibernians player, Lee Devitt very impressive in the opening 45 minutes. Devitt and fellow Clare native, Barry Cotter were up against each other for much of the contest, with the Galway defender getting the upper hand in this game.
The Candystripes began the second period on the front foot, and midway through the half they introduced the experienced, Michael Duffy.
United defended well throughout the half, however in the 91st minute their hearts were broken, when Kevin dos Santos, weaved his way through the United defence and threw two dummies, before he curled a delightful strike with his right foot into the back of the Galway net.
Minutes later, referee, Alan Patchell blew the full-time whistle, as the points were shared at FIND Insurance Celtic Park.
Next up for Caulfield’s charges is a home game against Shamrock Rovers on Friday night, at Eamonn Deacy Park.
