Match Report: Galway United 0-1 Dundalk FC

TYREKE WILSON struck in stoppage time to secure three points for Dundalk as Galway lost out at their home a long way away from home.

Playing at Turner’s Cross in Cork due to the lack of any suitable available venue in their own county this weekend, the Tribesmen’s trip home will have been a miserable one after the Lilywhites left them with nothing to bring back up the road.

Fourth-placed Dundalk started brightly and thought they should have been awarded a penalty in the fifth minute after Daryl Horgan and Arthur Parker had a coming-together in the Galway box.

However, referee Kevin O’Sullivan saw nothing wrong with Parker’s tackle.

The Swansea loanee was lining out in the maroon jersey for the first time in a number of weeks after he had sustained a nasty hamstring injury.

Dundalk continued to dominate for much of the opening quarter and minutes later, Northern Ireland Under-21 international Eoin Kenny saw his effort saved by Evan Watts in the Galway goal.

Despite being completely under the cosh early on, John Caulfield’s side did grow into the contest and Ed McCarthy came close to opening the scoring before the break.

Eight minutes into the second half, Killian Brouder almost turned the ball into his own net after a Kenny delivery but it went narrowly wide, to the Limerick native’s relief.

Danny Mullen had a glaring chance midway through the half for the visitors but his header was off target.

But in the 91st minute, the Louth outfit deservedly grabbed the winner when Wilson unleashed a left-footed effort from outside the box that flew into the back of the Galway net, sparking jubilant scenes in the away end.
