Goals from Michael Noonan, Adam Brennan and Tunmise Sobowale sealed all three points for Shamrock Rovers in Galway on Friday night.
Stephen Bradley’s side put in an impressive performance at Eamonn Deacy Park and while Rovers tested the patience of their followers against the westerners at times, they delivered the goods in the end, to pick up another important victory.
The away side started brightly and took the lead in the second minute, when Noonan fired an effort into the back of the United net at the Dyke Road end, from the edge of the hosts’ penalty area after a mazy run.
To their credit, Galway grew into the contest as the half went on and they created a number of chances before Rovers doubled their advantage in the 26th minute when Brennan tapped the ball into an empty net after Evan Watts tipped the initial Rovers effort onto the post.
The Terryland outfit started the second period on fire and Mattie Wolfe brought them back into the game, when he scored a fantastic header, following a Hurley corner.
United went in search of an equaliser but Sobowale ended in the game as a contest in the 73rd minute, when he struck a right-footed shot to the Galway net.
Galway United will travel to face Sligo Rovers next Saturday, while Rovers are away to Dundalk on Friday night.
