Goals from Wasiri Williams, Jimmy Keohane, Kris Twardek and Francely Lomboto secured all three points for Galway United on Saturday night, as they comfortably defeated Sligo Rovers.
In an other edition of the Connacht Derby between Galway United and Sligo Rovers, it was the visiting side who started this contest brightly and they opened the scoring after five minutes, through Williams.
The defender finished to the net after a David Hurley corner.
12 minutes later however, Sligo levelled matters from the penalty spot, after Cian Kavanagh was fouled in the United box.
Alex Nolan dispatched the resulting penalty, to level matters.
This provincial derby was a physical affair, with both sides playing a direct style of football and fighting tooth and nail to win second balls.
To their credit, Galway responded well and they retook the lead just over 10 minutes later. Ed McCarthy was fouled on the edge of the penalty box, and Keohane finished resulting free-kick into the back of the Rovers net.
In the remaining minutes of the half, the trailing side pushed for an equaliser but John Caulfield's side held on, to lead at the break.
The hosts began the second half on the front foot, but Galway defended well in the third quarter.
In the 73rd minute, former Sligo player, Twardek, poked the ball home from close range after Sligo failed to clear a United delivery.
Seconds later, Lomboto put the icing on the cake, as he was slipped in by Twardek, and he finished calmly to the back of the net.
Next up for United is a home game against Bohs next Friday night, at Eamonn Deacy Park.
