Match report: Galway United 3-2 Sligo Rovers

Match report: Galway United 3-2 Sligo Rovers

JOHN CAULFIELD hailed an “incredible win” as Galway United edged a thriller with Sligo Rovers at Pearse Stadium.

Over 3,000 punters were at the home of Galway GAA for the clash as Mattie Wolfe won it with a 93rd-minute winner.

The tribes took a two-goal lead into the closing stages with efforts from Frantz Pierrot and Wolfe.

A quickfire brace from sub Cian Kavanagh levelled matters by the 86th minute for the Bit O'Red — who were down to ten men after Seb Quirk was dismissed.

But Wolfe struck at the death with a superb volley to seal a dramatic win on Corribside.

And United boss Caulfield said: “It was an incredible win in the end but we hit self-destruct on ourselves. We were so much in control and so much in charge of the game. It was a really strong performance.

“Our play was really good. They got a man sent off and we dropped off for some reason. We were all over the shop at the back but Wolfy scored an incredible volley.”

In glorious conditions, the first half belonged to the hosts and they took the lead with 34 minutes played.

Following some scrappy play down the right flank, Jimmy Keohane pulled the ball back to Pierrot on the edge of the six-yard box.

And the Haitian was on hand to poke the ball into the Sligo net. Things went from bad to worse for the visitors eight minutes into the second half as Quirk was sent off after picking up a second yellow.

Galway should have doubled their lead on the hour when Pierrot blocked down Sligo keeper Sam Sargeant’s clearance.

But the Bit O’Red netminder recovered well to deny the ex-Drogheda United frontman.

United went 2-0 up in the 72nd minute when Wolfe slotted home after an incisive counter attack.

But Sligo did not give up and got back into the game through Kavanagh’s double.

The former St Pat’s youngster halved the deficit in the 81st minute after ghosting behind United’s defence.

The teams were level five minutes later as the striker latched onto a long ball before firing home. But Galway had the final say as Wolfe volleyed in from distance after a David Hurley cross.

Defeat leaves Sligo bottom with Galway seven points clear in seventh.
And frustrated Rovers chief John Russell said: “The lads did so well to come back with ten men.

“Mattie Wolfe has probably never struck a ball better but what can you do.”
