Galway United Academy Round-Up: Week Ending 22nd September 24′
Last weekend 4 of the 6 Galway United Academy sides were in action with a mixed bag of results for the teams. Three of the Galway United Academy sides currently find themselves top of their league tables.
No Game Last Weekend, Previous Result : Dundalk 5 Galway United 1
The men’s under 20s weren’t in action last weekend. Their last result was a disappointing 5-1 loss away to Dundalk on the 14th Sep, with Kyle Fitzgerald scoring United’s only goal. Despite the result they still sit first in the league.

No Game Last Weekend, Previous Result : DLR Waves 1 Galway United 3
Our Women’s U19s weren’t in action last weekend. Their last time out was away to DLR Waves on Sunday 15 Sep. They went in 1-0 down at halftime after conceding just before the break. A quick turnaround saw United gain the lead after two goals in two minutes from Zainab Rather, and Isabelle Fitzpatrick. Then in the 80th minute Leanne Regan fired home to put the game to bed and ensure a hard fought 3-1 victory which keeps them top of the league with four games to go. Next up the WU19 side are back at home to take on Peamount United on Sunday Sep 29.

Galway United 3 Shamrock Rovers 2
The MU17 side were hoping to extend their stay at the top of the league on Sunday, and they did just that by beating Shamrock Rovers 3-2. Jack Sweeney was the hero yet again as he scored another hat trick making it his third in a row, and his tenth goal in three games. Sweeney’s first gave Galway the lead before Lee Brody quickly equalised for Rovers. Shortly after the break United were back ahead thanks to Sweeney’s second. Cian Kenna then brought the visitors back level, until the inevitable Jack Sweeney scored his and United’s third to close out the game. A huge three points for MU17 which sees them stay top on goal difference and a game in hand.

Drogheda United 0 Galway United 3
The WU17 extended their perfect record at this stage of the season with a big 3-0 victory over Drogheda United at the MDL Grounds. Galway United started hot with Katie McPhilbin opening the scoring in the 7th minute, Drogheda attempted to stay in the game but a Niamh Faherty goal in the 39th minute meant that Galway went into halftime with a two goal lead, before Anna McGough added a goal for herself to round off the scoring in the 65th minute.
The result puts Galway United WU17 on 15 points for the season with two games less played and one point behind league leaders Dundalk. The two sides meet on Saturday the 28th September at Oriel Park, Dundalk.

Galway United 1 Shelbourne 4
It was an afternoon to forget for Galway United MU15’s as they fell to a visiting Shelbourne at Moynevilla with a 4-1 defeat. Shelbourne opened the scoring as early as the third minute when Anunlopo struck past the goalkeeper. United would strike back in the 24th minute thanks to a goal courtesy of Lee Crowley Lydon. It looked like the scores would remain level heading into the second half but Anunlopo grabbed his 2nd goal of the day in the 41st minute. Shelbourne would kill off any hopes of a Galway United comeback with a goal from Madu just past the hour mark and Wuna would put the game beyond any doubt in the 86th minute.
The Galway United MU15’s side do not play again until the 5th of October where they travel to Roadstone Academy to face off against Shamrock Rovers.

Athlone Town 1 – 1 Galway United
Galway United Men’s U14s were in action at 4:00pm on Saturday as they took on Athlone town at Athlone Town Stadium in the 4th round of the EA Sports MU14 League of Ireland Group B – Phase 2. The last meeting between the 2 sides resulted in a 3 – 0 win for the Tribesmen. Galway’s U14s extended their 5 match unbeaten run against Athlone, earning a point with the match finishing in a 1 – 1 draw. Galway’s only goal was scored by Alan Corcoran and assisted by Ben Ginty in the fourteenth minute.
