REACTION: Dunne reacts to win against Bohemians
Galway United made it three wins from four on Friday night with a 5-3 win against Bohemians in an enthralling league encounter at Eamonn Deacy Park.
A brace from Enda Curran, along with goals from Jake Keegan, Padraic Cunningham and Ryan Connolly lit up Eamonn Deacy Park, pushing the Tribesmen up to 6th position in the table.
www.galwayunitedfc.ie spoke to Tommy Dunne after the game.
“I’m delighted with the result and the performance,” Dunne said.
“A home win was the key for us tonight but we knew we were up against it against an in-form team in Bohemians. They’ve been fantastic in the first phase of games and they’ve come into the second phase strong as well.
“But we’re always looking to win our home games, no matter who we face and tonight was a thriller with 8 goals. The game had everything. I hope the fans went home happy with all aspects of the game, including our play and the goals we scored. I think there was tenacity and divil in the players tonight, they were after the game and it was a fantastic performance and result. It’s another three points, now we look forward to Monday when we’ll try and get into a cup semi-final.
“Bohemians are a top four side and they’re there on merit, we really did work our socks off and we needed to work exceptionally hard to get the result. I know there were little mistakes we made but overall we performed extremely well and finally we got the rub of the green.”
Coming into the game, Galway United continued without the services of 8 players due to injury and suspension. Dunne was elated at the effort of his injury-hit squad.
“That’s what a squad is about,” Dunne explained.
“We’ve been a bit depleted in regards the group and injuries, guys stepped up to plate in recent weeks. This is new to them, playing in the Premier Division, some of them haven’t even played First Division football before.
“We’ve got a group of lads that seem comfortable with each other and they’re prepared to work hard. You can never take your eye off the ball though, when you start smelling yourself and you think you’ve arrived, then you’ve got a problem.
“What’s got the players in this situation where they’ve been winning games, is their work rate and effort. Now they have to continue it in training and matches and if they do, they’re giving themselves chances to win matches. It may not always happen, but the one thing you’ll get off this group is a shift in every game.”
Dunne is pleased with United’s start to the second series of games and he feels his players learned a lot from the first phase of games.
“We felt in the first phase of games, we were good in matches but we didn’t get over the line. We felt we should have had more points but we’ve given ourselves a target in the second phase and so far we’ve won the first two matches but there’s a lot of football still to be played.
“It’s going be a dogfight for us, we’re fighting to establish ourselves in the Premier Division. That’s our goal but with performances like tonight, you give yourself a chance of doing well.
“We’ve pushed up two places tonight but there’s very few points between the sides and that can change quickly if you’re not at it,” Dunne told www.galwayunitedfc.ie.
“We’ve got a really tough assignment away to Drogheda United next week and we’ve a league cup quarter final on Monday against Bohemians again, so we’ve got to manage the group for those games both from an injury prevention point of view and so we can get results.
“We’re hoping we can continue to perform and get a bit of luck with injuries, we’ve a few lads that will hopefully be back and they’ll be needed because there’s one or two lads that will be fairly fatigued after the work they’ve put into the game against Bohemians.”
