Niamh Farrelly signs for Galway United

FÁILTE NIAMH 👋

Galway United are thrilled to announce that Irish international Niamh Farrelly has signed for our Senior Women’s team ahead of the 2025 season.

CLUB CAREER SO FAR 🇪🇺

Niamh started her career locally at Esker Celtic before joining the League Of Ireland as a teen. She climbed the ranks at Peamount United and made her senior debut in 2015, aged just 16. During her five years at Greenogue, the midfielder played a key role in two successful title-winning campaigns, including a league and cup double in 2020. Farrelly also won multiple awards individually including making the Team Of The Year in 2018.

In December 2020, Farrelly departed Peamount to sign a three-year contract with Glasgow City, whom she played against in the UEFA Women’s Champions League previously with the Peas. On her debut for the Scottish side she scored and was named the Player Of The Match in a 3-0 win over Celtic. She continued her stellar form with Glasgow City scoring in three succesive games, helping them earn the Scottish Women’s Premier League title.

In 2023, Niamh moved to London City Lionesses, who compete in the Women’s Championship, the second tier of English football. She stayed in the English capital for one season and then in August 2024, Niamh returned Peamount Utd and made her second debut against DLR Waves. She played a key role at the base of The Peas’ midfield in the latter stages of the season, making eight starts and scoring one goal from defensive midfield.

NIAMH’S THOUGHTS ON THE MOVE 🗣️

Speaking to our club’s media team, Niamh discussed her move west and her ambitions for the upcoming season:

“I’m delighted to be here, this is a fantastic club with a really exciting squad”

Niamh Farrelly, Galway United

Farrelly has big ambitions with United for 2025, she stated: “I think we can really compete again this year and hopefully challenge on all fronts once again. Hopefully, I can play a big part and use my experience to help us move forward as a group”

PLAYING WITH THE NATIONAL TEAM 🇮🇪

Niamh has represented the Girls in Green on both a youth and senior level. Starting back in 2015 for the U17s side and then a step up to the U19s where she was made captain of her country. In 2018 she was named the U19s Women’s International Player Of the Year at the FAI Awards. Now a senior Republic of Ireland international, Niamh made her debut in 2019, she has earned her two most recent caps during her time in Scotland, with appearances against Australia and Iceland in 2021.

With more focus on the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division, aided by the recent success of Galway hero Julie-Ann Russell, Farrelly will be hoping to further her tally for the Girls in Green.

“We’ve all seen how well Julie-Ann has done and it can only excite and motivate you as a player. The league is so competitive and has become stronger in my time away, you could see it with the call-ups for Irish-based players last year. We’re all hungry for success as a group. We know how strong the league is but that is a good thing for us as individuals and Irish football as a whole.”
