Axel Piesold signs for Galway United

Galway United is delighted to announce the signing of 20-year-old English midfielder Axel Piesold for our Senior Men’s Team.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder arrives in Terryland following the expiration of his contract at Luton Town.

Axel spent the 2024-2025 season on loan at Cliftonville of the NIFL Premiership and impressed on loan at Solitude, racking up 24 league appearances, becoming a fan favourite and helping the club to qualify for the Conference League preliminary rounds.

FROM LONDON TO GALWAY 🇮🇪

Originally hailing from London, Axel joined the Spurs academy as a youngster and featured at U18 level before making the move to Kenilworth Road, joining Luton Town in January 2023 after a brief spell with non-league side Dunstable Town. Axel featured in several Premier League matchday squads for The Hatters before joining Cliftonville on loan prior to the 2024-25 NIFL Premiership season.

“I’m glad to get it over the line and really excited to get started. Well, I think after speaking with the manager and how he sees me fitting in, and seeing how the club’s gone over the last 18 months or so, I think it was a club that I wanted to join and be a part of, I’m really excited.”

During his time at Solitude, Axel earned plaudits for his midfield performances and popped up with a crucial goals for The Reds – scoring in Cliftonville’s European play-off final victory over Coleraine which sealed their spot in Conference League qualifying this summer. He also picked up his first piece of senior silverware in March when Cliftonville sealed the BetMcLean Cup after beating Glentoran at Windsor Park.

“So obviously at Spurs, going up through the age groups, I think it helped me technically progress and stuff. At Luton it was obviously great training with the first team and getting that experience. Then obviously coming to Cliftonville on loan was really good for me because it gave me men’s games and introduced me to what men’s football was really like. I think that was really useful before coming here.”

IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE 🌍

Axel featured in several Premier League matchday squads during his time with Luton Town in 2023/24, featuring on the bench against the likes of Manchester City, Aston Villa, Arsenal and Spurs.

WHAT TO EXPECT 🔥

Axel is a skillful central midfielder, who likes to make things happen and works hard when out of possession, which he explained in his own words below:

“I’m a technical midfielder. I like to get on the ball and play forward passes, carry the ball forwards, like to show off my range of passing as well. And then without the ball, I like to press and be aggressive.”
