🇱🇻 A New Season Begins!
The wait is over. A new season finally begins as Galway United return to SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division football, kicking off their 2025 campaign at Turner’s Cross in Cork. After an impressive 2024 season filled with highs and progress both on and off the pitch, John Caulfield’s men are ready to take on the top flight once again.
The opening game in The Cross, sees a repeat of the 2022 opener, in which Galway United came away with a 1-0 victory. Thanks to a lone goal from Ed McCarthy and some sublime work from Alex Murphy down the wing.
📊 The Matchup
Galway United and Cork City have avoided each other in the last two seasons. In 2023 Galway United won the First Division in style, setting a new record for goals scored. Meanwhile Cork City got relegated from the Premier Division. Now, after an impressive 2024 from both sides, Cork City are back in the top flight. There are a lot of crossovers between the two sides with former players on both teams. It’s set to be a huge opening game in Turner’s Cross, with both sides looking to make a statement on Valentine’s Day.

Last Meeting: Galway United 2-1 Cork City
This will be the first season since 2022 that the sides will be in the same division. It was the rebels that came out on top that season, winning the First Division with an eight point advantage over the Tribesmen. The rivalry went right to the wire, and it’s certainly something to keep an eye on in 2025 again. The last competitive game between the two sides was in Eamonn Deacy Park, with Galway United winning 2-1. The winning goalscorer, being the now Cork City captain Charlie Lyons. The League Of Ireland, did a feature video on the game, watch it below:

⚡ Cork City – Ruairi Keating/Sean Maguire
Cork City have strengthened significantly over the past few months, and one of their initial summer signings was former Galway United player Ruairi Keating. Keating had a hugely successful 2023 season in the Premier Division and made the move back to Cork, looking to find the same vein of form. He has done so thus far, with his new striking partner, the former PFAI POTY Sean Maguire, no less. Maguire has been scoring for fun in pre-season, Cork City’s attack is very potent, and will certainly cause trouble for United.
