Galway United travel to the newly renamed Sullivan and Lambe Park to take on the 2024 FAI Cup Winners, Drogheda United. Both sides have enjoyed an unbeaten start in the opening two games, as they both sit on four points. There were some exciting clashes between the two teams in 2024, with United coming on top, winning and drawing twice, keeping Kevin Doherty’s Drogs at bay.

πŸ“Š The Stats with Julian Canny

It will be the 81st meeting between the clubs. 18 wins for Galway United, 26 draws and 36 wins for Drogheda United. 42 of those meetings have come in the Premier Division with a 13-13-16 record. Away from home we’ve met 39 times and we’ve won 7, drawn 14 and lost 18 times.

Last season we dramatically won the first match up there 3-2, having been 2-1 down going into injury time before goals from Maurice Nugent and Stephen Walsh won it for us. Rob Slevin was credited with the goal that put us ahead initially but an Evan Weir free kick equalised before Steve Bawa put them ahead.

That famous game ended a run of 9 games without an away win against Drogheda dating back to 2010.

Across the 4 games last season we took 8 points with another scoreless draw at home as well as a 3-0 win right before the mid-season break in June.

Player milestones for Friday:

Vincent Borden in line for his 70th appearance

Jimmy Keohane in line for his 20th since joining mid-season last year.

28th February has seen us play five times previously with two wins, two draws and one defeat.

We haven’t played on the date in 27 years, since scoreless draw away to Home Farm in Whitehall in Division one.

It will be John Caulfield’s 160th game in charge which puts him equal with Don O’Riordan as having the second most amount of games in charge. (Tony Mannion leading the way with 381)
The 160 games is a record for a single spell in charge as a manager so he will break that on Monday.

⚽ Key Players to Watch

Image

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡²πŸ€© Galway United – Jeannot Esua
Cameroonian full-back Jeannot Esua has started 2025 in stellar form. He has provided two assists in the opening two games for United, and is really starting to showcase his full potential after signing in the off-season last year. Jeannot is an explosive right back who is capable of delivering a precise cross, a perfect tackle or taking on the opposing winger one on one. He’s certainly one to keep an eye on at tonight’s game.

🟣 Drogheda United – Thomas Oluwa
Thomas Oluwa is an exciting young striker, and is set for a big year in the Premier Division. Oluwa formerly played for Galway United for a brief period, signing in August of 2021. Since then he has featured for Athlone Town, Larne, Waterford, Wexford and now he finds himself at Drogheda United. Oluwa had an impressive 2024 with a return of nine league goals, these numbers had the Drogs interested as he signed in the off season.

πŸ“† Last time out

Galway United 2-1 St. Patrick’s Athletic

Galway United kept up their form last Friday against title favourites St. Pat’s as they came away with all three points after a Patrick Hickey brace. It was United who opened the scoring. A Hickey effort from outside the box took a double deflection and flew over Anang into the back of the Pats net. The one goal lead wasn’t enough as Hickey doubled his tally on the night, along with United’s lead. A brilliant cross from Esua on the right saw an emphatic header into the far post from Hickey.

St. Pat’s then got a goal back right before the break thanks to a brilliantly taken goal from Aidan Keena. The second half was a very tense affair, with no further goals, but there was no shortage of entertainment. There was plenty of chances for both sides but United held resolute, and have their defensive resilience to thank for that. Brendan Clarke’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed between the sticks as he helped United grind out the win.
