ABOUT THE OPPOSITION 🔵

Waterford have been in fantastic form since former manager Keith Long has moved on from the Blues last month. They have won their last three games on the trot and most recently of which they beat Shelbourne 0-1 in their own backyard on Monday evening.

In the middle of this winning streak Waterford managed to secure a first team manager on a full-time basis with the hiring of John Coleman. Coleman is no stranger to the League Of Ireland, formerly managing the Bit O’ Red in 2014. This Friday’s game against United will be his first game in charge of the Blues as they look to secure yet another three points. The blues now sit in 8th place in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division following their three consecutive wins over Bohemians, Derry and Shelbourne.

ABOUT UNITED 🇱🇻

The Tribesmen come into the game after two consecutive losses, to St. Pat’s and Bohemians last week. Currently sitting in 6th place, two points ahead of Waterford in 8th. United recently have had quite a good record against Waterford over the last few years but each game is different, particularly with a new look Waterford side under new management of John Coleman. United have been unlucky with several key injuries as of late, so there has been a bit less consistent of a starting XI for Caulfield’s men. One of the changes made recently was a first start for Cillian Tollett, a Galway United academy graduate, he impressed in his 45 minute cameo at Eamonn Deacy Park. The game also saw yet another goal for Moses Dyer, who sits comfortably on top of the top scorers list for the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division with eight goals to his name.

THE STATS WITH JULIAN CANNY 📊

  • It will be the 75th meeting between the clubs.
  • United hold the edge with 28 wins to 19 for Waterford and 27 draws.
  • Since losing to Waterford in the 2022 playoffs, United have been totally dominant, winning seven and drawing two of the nine meetings.
  • We have played them away from home 37 times, winning ten, drawing 14 and losing 13.

  • On our most recent trip last September we fell 0-1 behind early on to Dean McMenamy before Brendan Clarke saved a Padraig Amond penalty. In the second half we turned it around through goals from Walshy and Killian Brouder.
  • It will just be the 25th Premier Division meeting and we have lost three times with 10 draws and 11 wins.
  • Our record away win at Waterford was 3-0 which happened twice, firstly in a League Cup match in 1985 when Mickey McLaughlin and Martin McDonnell scored either side of an own goal.
  • In December 1988 we won 3-0 in a Premier Division trip to Kilcohan Park, Tommy Keane, Fran Gavin and Paul McGee scored in Seamus McDonagh’s fourth game in charge.

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION 🔴

Shelbourne come into the game in flying form with six consecutive wins in the league, and scoring a total of 27 goals in just seven games. They were triumphant in the Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup in 2024, with a resounding 6-1 in over Athlone Town in the final and have certainly carried that into the league this year. Under the management of former League Of Ireland player Eoin Wearen, Shelbourne have excelled domestically.

ABOUT UNITED 🇱🇻

United come into the weekend after a 0-3 loss to league champions Athlone Town the game previous, it will be a tough test against one of the title favourites but certainly something within the grasp of Phil Trill’s squad. United have been hugely dominant in a lot of games this season, and there were a lot of positives to take from the second half against Athlone too. United have struggled with injuries as of late, with a few experienced players sitting out of the fray at last week’s game against Eamonn Deacy Park, but their Academy players have served them well. Aoibheann Costello has been captaining the side this season and has put in some very inspired performances along with Therese Kinnevey who recently set a new all-time landmark for appearances. There’s a lot to be positive about as United take on the FAI Cup Winners at Tolka Park on Saturday.
