Galway United Academy Round Up: Week ending 1st September 24′

Last weekend 5 of the 6 Galway United Academy sides were in action this weekend and all emerged as winners adding to the successes of both the Men’s and Women’s Senior sides!

Longford Town 2 Galway United 3



Galway United’s MU20 side came away from Longford with the points to remain on top of the Northern section of Tier 2 of the final phase of league.
Kyle Fitzgerald opened the scoring early on with Gradi Lomboto adding goals either side of a Longford strike to leave United 3-1 up at half-time. Although Longford pulled a goal back 10 minutes into the second half the defence held out to secure the win.

Galway United 2 Dundalk 1

The WU19 side bounced back from the disappointment of losing in the cup the previous week to earn a tough win over Dundalk and keep the team on top of the Northern section of Tier 2 in the League at East United.
Emily Fitzgerald got both goals, opening the scoring early on before netting the winner 5 minutes from time after Dundalk had equalised midway through the second half.
Next weekend the team have a top-of-the-table clash away at Sligo Rovers.

Lineup: E Hernon, K Rather, L Regan, A O’Connor, Z Rather, S Gannon, J Greaney, K Singleton, E Fitzgerald, E Browne, M McGough.
Subs: L O’Connor, H Glynn, I Fitzpatrick, K Malone, V Lundstrom, C Joyce, B Garvey, K McPhilbin.

Galway United 6 Cobh Ramblers 0

The MU17 side had a resounding win over Cobh Ramblers on Sunday at Athenry. The MU17 are another side currently lying top of their section in this phase of the league. Jack Sweeney scored 4 times, completing his hat-trick in just 35 minutes! Scott Davitt had made it 4-0 by half-time and with 20 minutes to play Luca Menarini got on the scoresheet before Sweeney rounded off the scoring in the last minute.
This Sunday the team host Limerick FC at 14:00 in Athenry.

Galway United 8 Cobh Ramblers 0

The WU17 had a big win over Cobh Ramblers in the cup quarter-final played on Saturday at East United. Anna McGough scored a first half brace as Cobh kept the game tight until the interval but unfortunately for the Southerners the game got away from them in the second half. McGough completed her hat-trick in the 51st minute and added her fourth and fifth goals in quick succession midway through the half before the scoring was completed through goals from subs Emma Dillon, Rebecca Rooney and Kate McPhilbin.
They have been drawn away to Shamrock Rovers in the semi-finals to be played later this month while their next match comes in the league on Saturday afternoon in Longford.

Galway United 3 Wexford 1

The MU15 side came from behind to beat Wexford in Moyne Villa, Headford last Saturday. The team are competing in Tier 1 of the second phase of the league and recorded their third win of the season in a very competitive group.
Having fallen behind to the visitors just after the 20th minute, striker Lee Crowley-Lydon equalised within a minute and the same player put United ahead less than 10 minutes into the second half, Ben Ginty, more often playing with the MU14 side, came off the bench to round off the scoring.
The team’s next fixture is the return match away to Wexford in a fortnight.

Lineup: A O’Gorman, R Kenny, S Martin, L Carberry, C Sammon, T Lofinmakin, A Healy, C Kirby, E McDonagh, M O’Callaghan, L Crowley-Lydon.

Next Fixture: A v Wexford 14th September @ 14:00, Ferrycarrig Park, Wexford.

No game last weekend

The MU14 side travel to Dublin next weekend to face Shelbourne having won the opening two games of the latest group phase at this level.
This should be a good test for the side who so far this season have performed at a very high level
