Galway United vs Athlone Town – Saturday 12th October 4:30 PM at Eamonn Deacy Park, Galway.

This Saturday, Galway United welcome newly crowned league winners Athlone Town to Terryland at 4:30 pm in what is the final game of an impressive season for our women’s side.

Galway has  already confirmed their third-place finish for the season but will be looking to bounce back from last Thursday’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Treaty United in Limerick.

Galway United will be hoping to repeat their last league result over Athlone Town, a 2-0 victory away from home back in March.

The sides have met six times in their history, with United winning two, Athlone winning two and two draws.

Athlone town were the first opponents that Galway United faced, to kick off the 2024 season of SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division. The game ended 2-0 in Galway’s favor and from there the side would find themselves undefeated in their next six league fixtures which included wins over the likes of Bohemians, Sligo Rovers and Shamrock Rovers.

They would eventually taste defeat at the hands of Wexford in June but at this stage had begun an impressive run in the Avenir Sports All-Island Cup where they would progress through the group stage before defeating Treaty United in the quarter final in June.

The Semi- Final would take place against in Wexford in July where United needed penalties to make it all the way to the final. However around this time the side would find themselves out of the Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup as a result of  a 3-1 defeat at home to Shelbourne.

They would rebound with back to back games against Shamrock Rovers, beating them 1-0 at home in the league and once again with a penalty shootout  victory after a 0-0 draw which would crown them as Avenir Sports All-Island Cup champions.

Following on from their cup success they would not lose in their following six league games with five wins and one draw. Unfortunately the side would taste defeat in it’s two previous games, a 1-0 defeat at home to Shelbourne and a 1-0 defeat away to Treaty United.

Following the Treaty United defeat Galway United confirmed their position of 3rd for the season and will face league winners Athlone Town in their final game on Saturday.
