Match Preview – St. Patrick’s Athletic vs Galway United

Galway United are back in action this Friday 18th to take on St. Patrick’s Athletic in Richmond Park. Kick-Off is 7:45PM.

Galway United are away to St. Patrick’s Athletic on Friday 18th October in a crucial game in the men’s SSE Airtricity premier division. Galway United go into the game in fifth place but are level on points with St Pats, who are ahead on goal difference in fourth.

MATCH INFO ℹ️

St Pats have been impressive since the arrival of the former Ireland international manager Stephen Kenny, who will hope to continue his side’s late push up the table. No team in the league has picked up more points than St. Pats since Kenny’s arrival, and they have six wins in their last six. The last team not to taste defeat at the hands of the Saints: Galway United in Eamonn Deacy Park in August. Galway United who have also been in fine form of late, only have one defeat in their last nine games. With only three games to go, Friday’s meeting really is a crucial tie for both sides. So whether you’re in front of the tv at home or in the Richmond Park away end, give it your all and cheer the Tribesmen on.

JOHN CAULFIELD’S THOUGHTS 💬

Speaking exclusively to GalwayUnitedFC.ie John Caulfield gave his thoughts ahead of the game “We’re looking forward to the game. Stephen has come in and done an incredible job, as everyone would have expected. They’re on a fantastic run with a glorious chance of winning the league. Their form has been red-hot, after taking 22 out of 24 points from the last eight games. But we’re the last team to take points off them, which gives us some encouragement.

We know we’re going into a game where they are the red-hot favourites. All year, our lads have been fantastic. They’ve been up against it right from the start of the season and have done brilliantly. We know it will take an incredible performance to get a result.

We’re well aware of their strengths; they have a lot of pace on the wings and are a very streetwise team. Our discipline record has been good, we have the second-best record in the league. But again, we will need to show great composure and control in our pressing.
.
We are very conscious that in their last nine games, five opposition teams have been reduced to ten men, and that’s a situation we can’t afford to get ourselves into.

TEAM NEWS 🏥

Greg Cunningham, Maurice Nugent, and Junior Ogedi-Ozokwe are all out for the rest of the season.

“It was unfortunate about Greg; he’s gone for the season due to a horrendous challenge in the last game. It was really gutting for him and for us. In a short space of time he has become a big player for us, but that challenge took him out for the rest of the season, and it was a tough one to take.”

Friday’s match will be the fourth meeting between the two this season. The first two meetings saw Galway United come off the wrong end of two narrow defeats, and there was nothing to separate the two in the third meeting.

United welcomed St Pats to Eamonn Deacy park for the first round of the SSE Airtricity League in a game which saw the visitors claim all three points in a 1-0 win. St Pats came out victorious again in Richmond Park, after a late winner sealed a 2-1 win, with Francely Lomboto scoring for Galway. The most recent matchup ended 1-1 thanks to Ed McCarthy’s equaliser in a cagey affair.
