Match Report – Galway United v Bohemian FC

SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division

Galway United 2-0 Bohemian FC

Galway United secured a crucial victory in their battle for Premier Division survival on Friday night, when they defeated Bohemian FC at Eamonn Deacy Park.

It was the visitors who started the brighter on corribside, and they had the ball in the United net in the 5th minute, following a Rob Cornwall header. However, referee, Rob Harvey ruled the goal out for a foul in the United box.

Following this, the Tribesmen grew into the contest and two minutes later, Dara McGuinness had an ambitious effort go narrowly wide.

Just like the first quarter, the Dubliners started the second quarter on top. Despite their dominance during this period, it was John Caulfield’s charges who broke the deadlock in the 37th minute.

Patrick Hickey gave the westerners the lead when he latched onto a fine cross by Bobby Burns, as United went in 1-0 up at the break.

The men in maroon battled well in the opening exchanges of the second period, and moments into the second half, Jimmy Keohane almost doubled Galway’s lead but his header looped over Kacper Chorazka’s crossbar.

Just before the hour mark, United were awarded a penalty following a handball by Niall Morahan in the away side’s penalty area.

David Hurley stepped up to take the resulting penalty and he sent Chorazka the wrong way to double the home side’s lead.

Ten minutes later, Jeannot Esua had a glorious opportunity to make it 3-0 to United but his effort from close-range was hit straight at Chorazka.

James Clarke then had huge opportunity seconds later for Bohs, but his free header from 12 yards out went well over Brendan Clarke’s crossbar.

Jordan Flores was next to close for the North Dublin side in the 82nd minute, but his free-kick went just over the bar.

United were deserving winners on the night, where they performed brilliantly in the second half, on the same evening Stephen Walsh broke the all-time appearance record for the club.

Next up for United is another home game, when they will face Drogheda United at Eamonn Deacy Park, next Friday at 7.45pm.
