“We want to drive to new levels” – Phil Trill discusses crucial Treaty United clash on Saturday
Galway United return to Eamonn Deacy Park this Saturday at 5PM with a point to prove and three points to chase, as Phil Trill’s side prepares to face Treaty United in the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division.
Last weekend’s 2-1 defeat away to Shelbourne was a reminder of the fine margins at the top of the table, but not one that left United discouraged. In fact, the performance showed promise. United played with purpose and control in large spells, and despite the result, the squad emerged happy overall.
“It was a really good game of football,” said manager Phil Trill. “We probably lost our way in certain areas, but we’ve worked really hard this week to fix that. We’ve taken some good learnings.”
United’s Senior Women’s side over the past seasons has become a team known for their tactical structure, fast flowing football, and particularly for having faith in youth. This season has seen that philosophy continue to bloom, with a new generation of academy players making the step up. Last weekend 18-year-old Emily Fitzgerald was involved in yet another goal contribution, showing her growing influence in the side just a few weeks after being called up from the WU19 squad and making her debut.

Anna McGough is another Academy star that has made her first team debut recently too at just 15 years of age. Anna and many others from the club’s thriving academy, represent a long-term vision for Galway United. A vision rooted in local development and a clear ethos on style of play. Phil Trill and his side will certainly be implementing the same on Saturday for the visit of the Shannonsiders.
The opposition, Treaty United, come into Saturday’s game in a similar position. They too are looking to steady the ship after a tough run of fixtures that included defeats to Peamount United and Shelbourne. Within this however, Treaty have developed a lot, adding several international players and continuing to develop a young squad with a real threat in front of goal.
Both sides will have a point to prove with their recent form. In general, meetings have been competitive with United winning our last game at Eamonn Deacy Park 4-1 and then losing 1-0 in Limerick. There’s a lot on the line as the teams look to climb back up a very tight league table.

“We want to drive this to levels that have never been seen” Trill said earlier this week. “But we can only do that as a collective. With the people of Galway behind us”
As we prepare for the visit of Treaty United on Saturday, we need your support. To get behind the team, to get behind women’s football and help bring the club to new levels. Watch Phil Trill’s interview in full below:
