Galway United signed Bobby Burns in June 2024 joining our senior men’s team from Glentoran. Burns, a versatile 24-year-old footballer from Antrim, Northern Ireland, brings a wealth of experience and skill to the squad, having played in various leagues and positions throughout his career.
Bobby Burns has had an impressive career trajectory. He started his youth career at Lisburn Distillery and Cliftonville before joining Glenavon in 2015, where he quickly made a name for himself. Burns’ versatility allowed him to excel in multiple roles, whether as a left back, midfielder, or even an attacker. His performance at Glenavon earned him accolades, including the NI Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year Award, and he was twice named Glenavon’s Young Player of the Year and Fans’ Player of the Year.
Burns’ career then took him to Scotland, where he signed a three-year contract with Heart of Midlothian in 2018. During his time there, he had loan spells at Livingston and Newcastle Jets in Australia, gaining valuable experience in different competitive environments. In 2020, he joined Barrow in League Two before returning to Glentoran, where he made significant contributions over three seasons, including winning the Player of the Season in 2023.
Burns has also represented Northern Ireland at various youth levels, from U17 to U21, and has trained with the senior national team. His international experience adds a valuable element to his game, captaining Northern Ireland at Youth level on many occasions.
Did you know Bobby cycled and ran the equivalent of the length of Ireland during lockdown. Over 22 hours of cycling and 490km spread across a month! 🚲
One of Bobby’s favourite sports outside of football is golf, we cannot confirm nor deny if he is any good at it. ⛳️
Did you know Bobby Burns actually commentated some football games on BBC 2 while he was recovering from an injury 🎙
