 About The Teams

Galway United Men’s last five (L to R): LLLWD

Men’s Last game: Galway United 0-0 Shamrock Rovers

Our last Senior Men’s game was a scoreless draw in Tallaght Stadium. United held out the title favourites, top of the league Shamrock Rovers and kept a clean sheet in Dublin. Shamrock Rovers were five wins on the bounce coming into the game, including a 4-0 hammering of title hopefuls St. Pat’s at home. United however remained resolute, despite Shams’ 23 attempts at goal, the Tribesmen never looked like conceding. An outstanding defensive display from Evan Watts in goal and the back-line saw United earn a crucial point in the capital.

Women’s Last Game: Galway United 2-0 Cork City

Our Senior Women’s side’s last game was a 2-0 win against Cork City in Moyne Villa. Two set piece goals saw United qualify for the All-Island Cup Quarter Finals. An early finish from Amanda Smith and another from Beletic on the stroke of half-time saw United come away with all three points. United played quite well, creating a lot of quality chances throughout, with a Jodie Griffin effort off the post unlucky not to fly into the Rebel’s net. United limited City to very few, if any major chances throughout the game to earn their first clean sheet of the season.

Derry City’s last five (L to R): WWDLL

Derry City come into the game one place, and three points ahead of United. The Candystripes have been a tad inconsistent this season, which is inevitable given a large turnover in the squad and backroom staff during the off season. City have won five of their last nine games but haven’t had a win in over a month, since the 9th of May. They have lost the last two and drawn one. Their inconsistency makes them hard to predict, on paper they have a very talented and experience squad so United are in for a real challenge in the Brandywell.

Cork City Women’s last five (L to R): LLLDL

Cork City come into the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division clash without a win since the 12th April. In their last win, eight games ago, the rebels beat newcomers Waterford 4-2 at Turner’s Cross. City since then have struggled but have put in some very spirited performances, they made it very difficult for United in Moyne Villa last weekend and certainly have the capability to put it to the Tribeswomen, especially with a home advantage.

Key Players

Galway United: (Men’s) Moses Dyer and (Women’s) Niamh Farrelly

Moses Dyer has been in fine form this season for United’s men’s side and is currently the league’s top scorer. The New Zealand native has scored some memorable goals for the Tribesman including a long range effort against Bohemian FC at Dalymount Park, earlier this season. He will certainly be looking to break into the double digits soon, and no better time than against Derry City at the Brandywell where he scored his first goal for United earlier this year.

Republic of Ireland international, Niamh Farrelly, has been a key player for Phil Trill’s women’s senior side this season. Farrelly signed for United at the start of this season, which was a real eye-catching signing in the league. The former Esker Celtic player has previously lined out for the likes of Glasgow City, Parma and London City Lionesses and the Republic of Ireland team before signing for United. She unfortunately had a spell out on the sidelines recently before making her way back into the team in an away game against Shelbourne last month.

Farrelly’s experience and ability is evident when you see how Trill’s side play. Farrelly’s technical and physical ability are among some in the best of the league, as a holding midfielder she is able to both defend in 1v1 duels and take people on and create chances. Farrelly also scored herself, against Shamrock earlier this season. She is certainly one to keep an eye on in Turner’s Cross.

📊 The stats for the Derry City game with Julian Canny

It will be the 77th all-time meeting between the clubs
United have won 21 times with 15 draws and 40 wins for Candystripes.

63 of the meetings have come in the Premier Division with a record of 16 wins, 15 draws and 32 defeats.

35 of the meetings have been away from home with 6 wins, 8 draws and 21 defeats. 34 of those 35 games were at Brandywell with one taking place at Maginn Park in Buncrana, which Derry won.

We won on our very first trip to Brandywell in the 86/87 League Cup but then went 14 trips (D 3 L 11) before we won again in October 2000.

Our record away win came in September 2009 when goals from David Cooke, Aaron Greene and Alan Murphy gave us a comeback 3-1 win after former Ireland international James McClean had opened the scoring. In October 1989 we suffered our heaviest ever defeat losing 9-1 up there. Both Jonathan Speak and Alex Kristic scored hat-tricks. Tommy Keane scored a late goal for us.

On This Day

We have played on this date (13th June) four times previous with three wins and one defeat.

It’s exactly one year since we beat Drogheda 3-0 at home, Stephen Walsh with two goals and Conor O’Keeffe with the other.

20 years ago to the day we lost an FAI Cup replay to Cork City in Turner’s Cross under Stephen Lally. We were controversially denied a penalty in the original game and lost to one in the replay.

C’mon United, make sure to show your support at the games or from Galway!Â
