Sports Direct Men’s FAI CUP

Galway United 2-0 Tolka Rovers

Goals from Stephen Walsh and David Hurley saw John Caulfield’s side advance in the Cup following a hard earned victory over Leinster Senior League side, Tolka Rovers.

United dominated possession for large periods in the first half, and the Tribesmen were rewarded for their pressure midway through the half, following a fine goal by Stephen Walsh.

To their credit, the non-league responded well and tested United’s defence at times.

Similar to the first half, Galway had the majority of possession and they created the better of the chances, however they had to wait until the final quarter until the insurance goal came. Following neat build up play, Dave Hurley rifled an effort to the back of the Dubliners net with just over 10 minutes remaining.

United are back in league action next weekend, as they face Waterford FC next Friday in Eamonn Deacy Park at 7.45pm.

Athlone Town 1-1 Galway United

Current league champions, Athlone Town, and Galway United played out a battling draw in a high-quality affair at The Athlone Town Stadium on Saturday evening.

Kelly Brady was credited with the opener in the first half, as her deflected header gave the midlands outfit the lead, but a spirited second half saw an Aislinn Meaney stunner earn a deserved point on the road.

The hosts took the lead following good play by Hannah Waesch, who whipped a ball into the box, and Kelly Brady’s header appeared to come off a Galway defender last and end up in the net.

With just over five minutes remaining, United got a deserved equaliser. Substitute, Meaney fired an unstoppable 25-yard effort into the top corner.
