Weekend Review – Sep 6th + 7th
SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division
Galway United 2-1 Shelbourne
Phill Trill’s Galway United Senior Women’s side came from behind on Saturday afternoon, to pick up a vital three points at Eamonn Deacy Park. The early exchanges were cagey at the Terryland venue with both teams defending well. United though were creating the majority of chances, with a Bergin effort from distance being tipped over the bar for a goal kick. Costelloe almost found the opener with an effort from distance palmed onto the inside of the post and along the goal line. However, it was the away side who took the lead in the 37th minute, through Mackenzie Anthony. United held the ball well and kept creating chances and were unlucky to go into the break behind.
United levelled matters just two minutes into the second half, when Emma Doherty finished well with a header. Both sides pushed for a winner, however, it was Jamie Erickson who got the goal for United in the 68th minute with a fine headed effort. That was Erickson’s third goal in four games for United since signing back earlier this summer.

The Dubliners dominated the last 20 minutes, however Trill’s charges held on for all three points thanks to some fantastic defensive actions. Nicole Nix pulled off a great save to deny a very late equaliser for the reds.
SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division
Shelbourne FC 1 – 0 Galway United FC
After a difficult week and a half, for the players and management of the Galway United senior men’s side, the Tribesmen returned to action last Sunday, for the
first time since the passing of former United assistant manager, Ollie Horgan, at the age of 58. This tie at Tolka Park was previously meant to take place on August 31 st , however due to the Salthill native’s funeral taking place on the same weekend, the game was re- arranged to last weekend.

Despite the defeat, following a late Harry Wood penalty, United deserve a lot of credit for how they acquitted themselves, under extremely difficult circumstances. On an emotional evening in North Dublin, a minute silence was impeccably observed prior to kick off in memory of the legendary League of Ireland figure. United club
captain, Conor McCormack and Shels captain, Mark Coyle, who played under Horgan at Finn Harps, also laid a wreath in memory of the former Republic of Ireland U18
school manager on the centre circle of the pitch, before the game. Shelbourne fans also unfurled a flag in the Riverside Stand paying tribute to a man who was loved by the
entire league. Both United and Shels wore black armbands during the contest.

In truth, Shelbourne dominated the play for large periods, however the Tribesmen were defensively astute. Shelbourne had a plethora of chances, most notably from Evan Caffrey in the 27th minute from just inside the box which was skied over into the netting behind the goal, and again in similar fashion by Woods in the 39th. United on the other hand were still creating some chances, with McGuinness exemplifying hard work as he pressed the red’s backline earning a few half chances. United continued throughout the half to carve out some opportunities on the counter but nothing major to trouble the newly signed Speel in goal for Shelbourne. United went into the break all square against the league champions at Tolka Park, thanks to some brilliant defensive actions.
The second half was more of the same as United defended well, with two goal line clearances from Ed McCarthy in quick succession on the hour mark. The home side’s pressure finally paid off with just under 10 minutes remaining, when they were awarded a penalty, which Wood finished well. United kept pushing forward trying to equalise but unfortunately couldn’t find that bit of luck. United worked very hard and defended well for long periods against the champions who recently qualified for the UEFA Conference League, and were unlucky not to get a point from the trip to Dublin.
