Friday Night Lights: Galway United vs Shamrock Rovers

Date: Friday, March 15th
Time: 7:45PM
Location: Eamonn Deacy Park
Event: SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division

We’re now onto our sixth game of the campaign with the senior men’s side and games don’t get much bigger than this. United come into the game after a 0-0 draw with Drogheda United last week and sit in third place, on seven points after five games. We host Shamrock Rovers who have won the last 4 league title in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division. Although they are still in search of their first win of the season, and will be eager to make things right in Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday night, backed by a large travelling support.

Captain, Conor McCormack is aware of the threat that Rovers pose, even if things haven’t gone perfectly for the champions thus far “We know Shamrock Rovers have great talent throughout their squad. They are serial winners. They had a bit of a slow start but they did that last year so it’s no problem to them. All the lads know what they have to do”

You can check out a full interview from the press conference with Ollie Horgan and Conor McCormack ahead of the game, below:

93rd Meeting with Rovers. We’ve won just 12 from 92 meetings with 16 draws and 64 losses.

  • Incredibly we’ve lost the last 20 times we’ve played them dating back to 2009 when we drew 1-1 in Tallaght on the second last day of the season 30th October 2009. Aaron Greene, now at Rovers, scored for us that night in a result which effectively gave the title to Bohs ahead of Rovers.
  • Our last win against them came in the 2006 Division 1 season when a Derek O’Brien goal helped see them off in Terryland on 6th October 2006, while our last win in the Premier Division came on 15th September 2000 when an Eric Lavine goal saw them off at home.
  • Our record from 47 home games against them is 5 wins, 9 draws and 33 defeats.
  • We’ll be hoping for just our 10th top flight win (Prem and pre-2-Division) in our 82nd meeting. (15 draws and 57 defeats)
  • Stephen Walsh is almost in the top 5 of all-time appearances now that he’s back. Friday would be his 302nd game for the club, with Billy Clery 5th on 305 (Gerry Mullan and Stephen Lally have 304).
  • As well as Aaron Greene, who played 14 times for us with 5 goals, Lee Grace is another ex-player in their ranks, Lee scored once in 26 matches before joining Rovers in 2017, when we eventually got relegated.
  • On our side Conor McCormack played for Rovers’ league winning side in 2011 and in the Europa League group stages that season and also won the League Cup and a couple of Setanta Cups in his 3 seasons there.

15th March has seen us play 6 times before with 1 win, 2 draws and 3 defeats.

  • Most recently we drew 1-1 away to Cobh on the second day of the 08/09 Premier Division season with Derek O’Brien scoring a second half equaliser for Tony Cousins’ men. Cousins would be sacked two weeks later after that was the only point from our opening 4 games of the season.

Saturday Evening Showdown: Galway United vs Cork City

Date: Saturday, March 16th
Time: 5 PM
Location: Eamonn Deacy Park
Event: SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division

Galway United Senior Women’s side have their first home game of 2024 as they welcome Cork City to Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday evening. Make sure to show your support for the Tribeswomen this Saturday. Fresh off of a convincing 0-2 win against Athlone Town, Phil Trill’s side will be looking to keep those performance levels up as the Rebels travel to Eamonn Deacy Park. Check out the highlights below:

Cork faced a tough start with a home match against champions Peamount United, ending in a 2-0 loss. Despite their last-place finish last season, Cork proved to be challenging opponents in previous encounters. United narrowly secured a win at Turner’s Cross, courtesy of a late Slattery goal. As they gear up for their next game, United won’t underestimate Cork and will count on their home crowd for support.
