Kyle Fitzgerald signs professional contract

Galway United are delighted to announce that academy graduate Kyle Fitzgerald has signed a professional contract with the club.

The 16-year-old has had some successful years in the club’s academy, historically winning the league with the U14 squad in 2021. Then making the step-up to the U17s in 2022, and now playing with the U19s squad in 2023 at just 16 years of age. His talent has also caught the eye nationally, with call-ups to the Ireland U17s squads on many occasions.

John Caulfield is delighted with Fitzgerald signing a professional contract, he said the below:

It’s fantastic for the club, he’s a local lad coming through with lots of talent. We’ve had lots of success the last couple of years with Alex Murphy going on to Newcastle United and David Tarmey coming through and now Kyle signing a contract. Kyle’s an exciting technical player, he’s doing really well with the Ireland teams too. We’re looking forward to working with Kyle and to continue his development and deliver on his undoubted potential with Galway United.

Kyle Fitzgerald of course features regularly for Ireland underage squads with his exciting, direct and technical style of play. Being part of the national team as far back as U15s. Progressing onwards with the U16s and now with the U17 Ireland team. Kyle’s talent is clear and progress is clear to see for United fans, and will certainly be an exciting player to keep an eye on in 2024.

Kyle Fitzgerald said this about signing his first professional contract at 16 years of age:

Very proud moment for me and my family to sign a professional contract. I’ve been at the club since U14s level, Johnny Glynn and Martin Devlin were fantastic for me in my development in the Academy and Galway United helped me develop as a player. There’s a big step-up now for the first team, especially because I’m only sixteen years of age, but I feel capable and can’t wait to get started.

Martin Devlin of the Galway United academy managed Kyle at U17s level previously and said the below:

The academy has come a long way in the last few years as players now have that full pathway to develop, it’s great for the players, staff and fans. Kyle has learnt lots in the last 12–18 months even, and you can see his development. He’s a really exciting player, so we’re delighted for him to sign his first professional contract today as an academy graduate.
