Lucy Jayne Grant joins United!

Fáilte Lucy Jayne Grant!

Galway United are delighted to share the signing of full-back Lucy Jayne Grant. 20-year-old Lucy hails from Ballyhaise, Co. Cavan and has played the last five seasons with fellow League of Ireland side and 2023 FAI Cup winners Athlone Town. Grant can be seen as a very versatile left full-back. Lucy herself described her playing style to us at her unveling in Eamonn Deacy Park “I tend to attack minded left full back, I love to get high up the pitch and do lots of overlapping runs, put the ball in the box and cover my defensive duties aswell”

Lucy started her football career in her local town of Ballyhaise, playing with Ballycaise Celtic, initially with the U8’s boy’s side. She stayed at her local side for three years before playing with Cavan Shamrocks, here she took big strides in her career on a provincial level. Grant represented Cavan as part Gaynor Cup teams and an Ulster provincial team. Her standout performances at this level earned Lucy a move to League of Ireland side, Athlone Town in 2019.

Lucy yet again showed her prowess as a dynamic full-back playing at the highest level in the country. Grant featured prominently for Athlone from U17s, U19s and at senior level. At U19 level in the EA Sports LOI Academy, Grant helped Athlone Town become the National Tier 2 Champions, scoring a goal in the final against Bohemians, with Athlone running out 2-0 victors in October 2022. The following year in 2023, Grant was part of the senior squad that won the Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup. Defeating Shelbourne in a dramatic final in Tallaght Stadium.

Lucy Jayne Grant has now moved down the M6, from Athlone Town to Galway United as she looks to fulfill her high potential with the Tribeswomen in 2024. She spoke to us at her unveiling about what it means to join United as she noted “Yeah I’m delighted to join Galway United. I was looking for a new challenge after last year and after seeing what Phil and the team did last year in the All-Island Cup, it was really impressive and I can’t wait to get started here.”
