Match Preview – Galway United vs Waterford

Galway United are back in action at Eamonn Deacy Park this Friday March 1st to take on Waterford FC. Kick-Off is 7:45pm.

The Tribesmen will be looking to capitalise on last week’s great performance against Dundalk away from home. Waterford come into the game following a convincing win against Drogheda United and sit top of the league, albeit after just two games. Both teams were newly promoted this season but have already made an impact. While United are on 3 points in fifth place, the Munster side top the table for the first time in 19 years following their 4-1 trouncing of Drogheda United.

The Tribesmen took 10 points from a possible 12 against Waterford in the First Division last season but Keith Long’s side boast a host of new signings in 2024.

Your support is crucial as every game counts, particularly when playing at home.

John Caulfield’s thoughts 💭

Senior Mens manager John Caulfield spoke to our partners over at Galway Bay FM ahead of the game and emphasised the importance of the fans for the team. “We have three home games this month, and it’s important the fans come out again. Having home advantage can make a huge difference” listen in full below to Caulfield’s thoughts ahead of the clash.

Previous Encounters

Last season saw United and Waterford clash multiple times in the second tier you can check out some highlights below. United of course that season ended up winning the league convincingly, but things are different now in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division.

It will be the 70th meeting between the clubs. 24 wins, 26 draws and 19 defeats.

  • It will just be the 20th meeting at Premier Division level with 7 wins, 9 draws and 3 defeats.
  • We have played them at home 33 times times and our record stands at 15-13-5. It took us until our 6th attempt to beat them at home but in our last 7 home games we have 6 wins and 1 draw going back to a defeat on 3rd August 2007.
  • Rob Slevin is in line to make his 40th appearance and Aodh Dervin could make his 20th, his goal against Dundalk was his first goal for the club – he actually scored twice for Longford against us.
  • 1st March has seen us play 6 times before with 3 wins and 3 defeats.
  • Most recently we played on 1st March 5 years ago in 2019 winning 4-0 away at Wexford with Donal Higgins, Conor Barry, Maurice Nugent and Colin Kelly in the goals.
