MATCH REPORT | Longford Town 1-0 Galway United (Men’s First Division)

Galway United saw their second loss of the 2023 season after Longford Town win 1-0 in Bishopsgate thanks to a goal from in form striker Cristian Magerusan.

In almost carbon copy of the fixture early in the year, Longford Town grabbed a goal in the first half and United dominated for the rest of the game but just couldn’t score, read it in full below. We also have highlights available on our YouTube Channel HERE.

FIRST HALF

The first 5 minutes saw United settle the better of the two sides, creating a few half chances as they had success down the left hand side, with Killian Brouder heading over from an Edward McCarthy throw in.

Longford Town though had the first major chance of the game, a strike from Adam Wixted just outside the box in the 8th minute flying wide of the post, but it looked like Clarke had it covered.

United kept creating chances for the first half an hour, with Conor McCormack causing havoc with his corners, along with heading opportunities from Killian Brouder and Wassim Aouachria

Out of nowhere Longford score to go ahead in the 29th minute, some great work down the left by Adeyemo to push away Evan O’Connor, gives himself a bit of space to drive a ball across the box and the in form Cristian Magerusan fires it home to put Longford one to the good.

The chances for both sides were limited for the remainder of the first half, but United again creating the cutting edge chances as yet again Killian Brouder sees his header fly just over the bar on this occasion.

SECOND HALF

United made a double substitution at the break with Stephen Walsh and former Longford Town player Aodh Dervin coming on for the Tribesmen. Within the first few moments they drove forward and created chances. Edward McCarthy drives a shot from just outside the box, similar to Wixted’s earlier in the game but he puts it right into Longford keeper, Jack Brady.

A few moments later United earn a corner, and Killian Brouder pops up again, this time with a volley, which he puts into the ground and it bounces just over.

United continued to dominate for the remainder of the game, having their third chance in just a few moments as Stephen Walsh saw an acrobatic bicycle kick saves by Jack Brady.

United had a few half chances in the following ten minutes, but it was in the 68th minute where everything turned to chaos. Oisin O’Reilly strikes from distance but Dylan Hand blocks the goal bound shot, it falls to Edward McCarthy on the left who whips in a ball and Brady is forced to tip it over the crossbar. United earn a corner, it’s taken short out to McCormack on the right who crosses the ball onto the six yard line, and three United players slide in to try tap it in but it just evades them and Brady saves again and Longford clear it for another corner. United then earn another corner, it’s crossed into the far post and cleared off the line, it falls to the near post of where the corner was taken and the shot is driven into the side netting. United get yet another corner and Stephen Walsh this time with the header and it gets cleared off the line onto the crossbar. A few moments later Edward McCarthy whips in a cross and Brady gets highest to tip it out wide and Longford can take a moment to breathe.

In the 83rd minute saw yet another United chance, this time Rob Manley was one on one with the keeper and he puts it through his legs but Brady gets a slight touch and it rolls inches wide of the post.

In the 95th minute Longford had their first major chance in the second half as they were unlucky not to double their lead right at the death, James Doona bearing down on goal shoots from an acute angle on the left but it flies just wide of the United goal, they earn a corner but the game is called to an end there.
