Joe Wright joins Galway United

Tá lúcháir ar Gaillimh Aontaithe a fhógairt go bhfuil Joe Wright ag síniú d’fhoireann sinsireach na bhfear roimh an séasúr nua i 2024

Galway United is excited to welcome Joe Wright, a talented goalkeeper, to our squad for the upcoming 2024 season. At 22 years old, English shot-stopper joins us from Championship side Millwall, where he has been developing his goalkeeping skills in the Academy since the age of 13.

Wright sees himself as a “traditional goalie” Whose strengths as a goalkeeper include impeccable shot-stopping abilities, solid positioning, and effective sweeping up. Wright’s distribution skills add another layer to his game, making him a well-rounded and reliable presence between the posts.

“I like to be on the front foot, high and sweeping. I like to be involved in the game, always offering angles to play”

Joe Wright, Galway United

While in his teens, Wright has made several matchday squads for Millwall in the Championship and Carabao Cup squads. Recognizing the importance of consistent senior minutes, Wright was sent on loan. This started with a stint at Bath City where he demonstrated his abilities at senior level, playing very well across 14 games before his loan was cut short by injury. Wright then also had spells lower down the pyramid with Walton Casuals and Cray Wanderers, where he was a standout player at that level. Winning multiple man of the match awards before returning to the Den with Championship side Millwall.

He rejoined Millwall’s U21 side and notably Wright played a pivotal role in their success in the Professional Development League South Division and clinching the National Title with a 2-1 victory against Sheffield United. With Joe himself performing under pressure, making a huge contribution in the final.

A key academy prospect for Millwall, Wright then embarked to Salford City on a half season loan. A crucial transition from the U21 side into full-time senior football featuring in the EFL Trophy in a short loan. Wright then moved back to Millwall recently before an exciting move to Galway United.

Joe Wright featured for United in a trial period during pre-season and impressed, not conceding a single goal for United thus far with wins coming against Treaty United, Cork City and Kerry FC. Wright who joins us from Millwall will certainly add some goalkeeping pedigree. Given his age profile too, he is definitely to keep an eye on for Galway United in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division.

Our players are available for sponsorship at the minute. To make an enquiry, please email Sam O’Neill at marketing@galwayunitedfc.ie to get involved for next season.
