U19 Report: Finn Harps 2-3 Galway United (AET)

Galway United under-19s secured passage to the next round of the Enda McGuill Cup in dramatic fashion as they overturned a two-goal deficit to defeat Finn Harps after extra-time in Ballybofey last night.

Yesterday evening’s cup tie began brightly for the visitors, but a penalty against the run of play awarded to the hosts in the early stages appeared to have given Finn Harps the initiative. Galway United ‘keeper Kevin Horgan made a fantastic save to deny Harps from the spot, but they were not to be denied as Kealan McDermott stuck from inside the box ten minutes later. United went into the break a goal behind having dominated possession but were unable to convert a couple of chances.

The second period began just as the first had, with United starting brightly, but another spot kick for Harps converted by Simon McGlynn saw their advantage doubled. As the game wore on, United pushed to get themselves back in the game. Ten minutes from time Andrew Connolly handed his side a lifeline, scoring a free-kick from just outside the box.

With just a few minutes left on the clock, Gary Kineen delivered a corner which was headed home by Maurice Nugent to take the match into extra-time.

Both teams battled to find a winner in extra-time, but following a goalmouth scramble, Aaron Conway rose highest to beat the Harps’ keeper and put United through to the next round.

A rewarding result for the Johnny Glynn’s young Tribesmen and coaching staff, who now prepare for the visit of Cork City on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off 2pm at East United FC, Castlepark.
