Match Report: Galway United 1-0 Bohemians

Galway United picked up a second home league win of the season against Bohemians at a windswept Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday afternoon.

In the swirling wind, Vinny Faherty latched onto Padraic Cunningham’s brilliant cross, and he prodded the ball past Dean Delany to seal the three points for the Tribesmen in an evenly contested encounter.

Despite the difficult conditions, United made a bright start and Padraic Cunningham had the ball in the back net after just 6 minutes but his goal was ruled out for offside.

Bohemians wideman Ben Mohammed tested Conor Winn after he beat Paul Sinnott to possession and accelerated past Kilian Cantwell, but the 6’6 ‘keeper pushed Mohammed’s shot out for a corner kick.

Kevin Devaney and Vinny Faherty linked up well before the ball broke to Ryan Connolly, who cut back on his right foot and shot, but he dragged his curling effort wide.

Five minutes into the second half, Dean Delany produced an excellent save to deny Vinny Faherty. Kevin Devaney did brilliantly on the left flank before slipping the ball to Faherty, who turned and shot but Delany got a strong hand to the ball.

Bohemians received another let-off when Vinny Faherty saw his goalbound shot cleared off the line by Dano Byrne after Dean Delany was deceived by the movement of the ball in the wind.

United hit the front with a goal of real quality in the 78th minute. Padraic Cunningham muscled his way past a Bohemians defender and he delivered a perfect ball to his strike partner Vinny Faherty, who tapped the ball into the far corner with his outstretched leg.

Bohemians only chance of note in the second half fell to Lorcan Fitzgerald in injury time. The full-back played a neat one-two before breaking into the box but he only found the side netting and United held on for a very hard fought win in extremely difficult conditions.
