Hanley heroics send United to Cup Final

Galway United net-minder Ger Hanley realised a dream at Eamonn Deacy Park on Monday night when he saved two of Dundalk’s penalties, helping Galway United to reach the EA SPORTS Cup Final.

Hanley often travelled home and away to support United in his childhood and he couldn’t hide his emotion after a historic night at Eamonn Deacy Park.

It feels fantastic, there’s a lot of tough times that you’ve got to go through in football, but these are the times you play for

“It’s a great feeling to get to a cup final with my home town club, the club I grew up supporting. To play a part in it is very special; he told www.galwayunitedfc.ie.

Hanley lauded praise on his defence and on the work ethic of his teammates across the board.

“It was a very hard working performance, the lads in-front of me did very well,” Hanley explained.

“Dundalk had a few chances and I had to make one or two saves but for most of the game, the lads kept them out.

“Dundalk have got some very good players, albeit they left a few players out but they’ve still got some serious attacking players like Horgan and McMillan.”

Reflecting on his teammates performances, Hanley insists United’s young guns can only improve in the future and he’s eager to cement himself as United’s number one.

“We’ve got a good, young squad and there’s a lot of enthusiasm in the group for playing.

“We work hard and we also work hard for each other and it’s a talented group. We want to be looking up the table and to stay right and stay focused.

“Today was great, my aim for the rest of the season is to stay fit and to stay involved. I have to continue to work hard,” an elated Hanley concluded.
