DUNNE: "Sam brings serious competition."

Tommy Dunne has made his first signing of the July transfer window, bringing in 6’5 goalkeeper Sam Ramsbottom.

Ramsbottom joins Galway United from Tranmere Rovers.

Shortly after the Liverpool native put pen-to-paper at Eamonn Deacy Park, Dunne spoke about importance of bringing the right type of players into the club.

“Since Sam has come in, he’s been professional, he’s come through the system in England.

“Sam sees this as an opportunity to try and become the number one at the club.

“Himself and Conor Winn will be pushing for that number one spot. There is serious competition there. He knows he has to perform, because Conor is there, and Conor knows he has to perform also.

“If we can get that sort of competition in every area of the pitch, then we will be delighted. Sam has come in, he’s a good professional, he trains very well. These are the type of players we want at the club.

“For this club to step forward, we need to have professional players playing. We’re always trying to push and make sure we get as much competition in each position as possible, because it brings out the best in people.”

Dunne feels Ramsbottom’s addition brings further competition to the club.

“Young Kevin Horgan is doing really well with the under-19s, Conor Gleeson has come in and covered well.

“We’re always trying to push and make sure we get as much competition in each position, because I think it brings out the best in people. If Conor Winn and Sam Ramsbottom are playing at their best, it’s good for the club.

“We hope to have Sam available for the Wexford Youths game on Friday. He’ll feature in someway. Conor Winn has been the number one, so he will probably start, barring injury.”
