Nineteen year old defender Kilian Cantwell suffered a knee injury during Galway United’s training camp at FOTA Island.
Scans on his knee revealed damage to the cartilage.
Kilian underwent successful knee surgery on Tuesday afternoon and now faces up to eight weeks on the sidelines recovering.
Manager Tommy Dunne said: “It’s extremely disappointing for Kilian and for the club. He settled quickly and he was applying himself brilliantly in training and he was raring to go for the start of the season. It’s very unfortunate but he’s a determined young man and he’ll come back strong. We wish him well in his recovery.”
